Speaking from the Ngongo grounds in Lindi region during the official opening of the fair earlier this week, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said the aim is to boost development of the southern regions.
The announcement comes in the wake of a request by the Chairman of Tanzania Agricultural Society (TASO) Englibert Moyo who urged the government to consider allowing the region to continue hosting the exhibitions for two more years in order to improve infrastructure at the grounds including water, power and construction of exhibition structures.
The Premier said the Southern regions, Lindi and Mtwara, were previously lagging behind in development compared to other regions due to poor communication infrastructure such as roads; but now road construction has been completed and so people should do away with these past notions,” he said.
Commenting on food security, Pinda said Tanzania is among the countries in Africa with surplus food enough to export to other countries.
“Recently the government dispatched 1,300 tonnes of cereals to assist Sudan and 500 tonnes went to Malawi,” he said noting that such assistance builds respect for the nation.
“In order to maintain the status of the nation it should first have surplus production to feed its people… I commend farmers for the good work,’ he added.
The PM also pledged that; “the coming administration will continue with the good basis which we have established.”
Earlier, Lindi regional Commissioner Mwamtumu Mahiza, called upon citizenry to elect leaders who will improve e the agriculture sector. This was in line with the theme of the exhibition: Big Results Now, Elect Leaders for boosting farmers and livestock keepers.
