The National Election Commission (NEC) has said that it is now working on the challenges that have emerged after voters registered in the Biometric Voter Register (BVR) to ensure that all eligible voters vote in the General Election.
NEC Deputy Chairman Judge Hamad Hamid (rtd) made the remark in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday at a dialogue which involved religious leaders and politicians to focus on how to uphold peace during the General Election.
He explained that, despite the challenges that have emerged during the registration and verification, NEC is well prepared to see all eligible voters cast their votes on the election day.
“There are some people whose names have been missing after registration. We have discovered that problem and are now working on it. I wish to assure all people who were registered in the BVR that we will find their names at the polling station on election day,” he said.
Hamid added that this year’s election is challengeable because many people have registered but NEC was taking all necessary measures to address all the challenges.
“We are working hard to ensure that all qualified voters cast their votes on time and peacefully,” he added.
He however assured the public that the Commission will announce election results without favouring any political party.
“NEC is obliged to obey and observe laws and election regulations effectively which require the Commission to announce those who win in the election and not otherwise,” he said.
Judge Hamid said that so far several measures have been taken against the people alleged to be going against the election code of conduct.
He said that all stakeholders are obliged to maintain peace during the election campaign and after results announcement so politicians should tell their follower to follow election regulations.
“Every person is responsible for upholding peace especially during the campaigns and even after election,” he said.
